Skelton & Brotton Parish Council Best Allotment Competition

Skelton & Brotton Parish Council Best Allotment Competition

Covid 19 forced the cancellation of all the local Produce and Agricultural Shows, including Skelton and Brotton Parish Council’s own Produce Show. Not to be deterred the Parish Council decided to do something new for their allotment tenants and hold a Best Allotment Competition.

This could be run following the Government Social Distancing Guidance at the time, and it was hoped plot holders would appreciate the opportunity to show off their gardens, and enter into some friendly competition with their allotment neighbours.

Entrants had to register to enter, and judging criteria was detailed to assist them. Plots were judged on the following:

General upkeep of buildings, internal hedges, fencing and pathways.
Plot clear of weeds and rubbish
Use of composters, water butts and recycled materials
Variety of produce
Quality of Produce

Prizes were a £25.00 National Garden Centre Gift Voucher for the best plot per site, with an additional £25.00 Gift Voucher for the best plot overall. Judging took place on Monday 20 August 2020.

Winners were as follows:

Cemetery Fields Site - Mrs Dorothy O’Connor
Spring Gardens Site - Mr Denis Galvin
Brotton Park Site - Mr Shaun Sleightholme and Mrs Rachel Sleightholme

The winner of Best Plot Overall was Mrs Dorothy O’Connor, who said her and her husband were delighted to be recognised for their hard work.
