As a Parish Councillor you have the opportunity to be involved in decisions which affect day to day life in the community, supporting local groups and organisations, managing allotments and play areas, commenting on planning applications as well as many other issues.
There is a growing reputation about the work carried out by Town and Parish Councils. They are an important tier of Local Government, they are close to the community, accessible and a vehicle for representations to the Borough Council.
In Skelton and Brotton, for example, the business of the Parish Council is conducted through the meetings of the Parish Council, Finance Committee and Allotment/Environment/Footpaths Committee. Sub-Committees or working groups can be formed to consider specific issues, Councillors represent the Parish Council on outside bodies such as North Yorks National Park Coastal Area Parish Forum.
If you would like to learn more, you could speak to the Clerk to the Council, Julie Wright, or talk to any local Parish Councillor. You can of course attend Parish Council meetings to experience them for yourself.
