Skelton & Brotton Parish Council Subsidised Seated Fitness Classes 1st Birthday!
The Seated Fitness Classes subsidised by Skelton and Brotton Parish Council celebrated their 1st Birthday on Thursday 27 February 2020!
The classes started out as a trial by the Parish Council, to tackle social isolation, and to reach out to people wanting to do some low impact exercise, while having fun and meeting new people. An extension to the first 6 weeks, has ended up with the classes running on a weekly basis, throughout most of the year, with numbers growing all the time. Numbers peaked at 42 in January and new participants continue to join.
Local Fitness Instructor Karen Winspear runs the 45 minute sessions for the Parish Council, to a varied soundtrack, and singing along is actively encouraged. Refreshments are available afterwards, for participants to enjoy, whilst having a chat. As it was a special day, scones with a candle were enjoyed after the ‘Birthday Class’.
Classes run every Thursday, 1.15pm - 2pm, at Skelton Civic Hall with a small £2 charge. All welcome!
Everyone was keen to say what the class means to them. Here are a selection of quotes:
Rita Porte: ‘my family don’t live near, so I rely on things like this to keep me going. They are long days on your own, and the company here is lovely.’
Josie Bland ‘I come for the stand up comedy.’
Ann Farndale ‘It gets you moving, and you have a laugh.’
Jean Peel ‘I love the company, I love the teacher, my daughter brings me and it gets me out, otherwise I wouldn’t get out.’
Sue Wright ‘I enjoy coming for the company. If you’re feeling down Karen picks you up.’
Nancy Sellars, who is 85 years old said ‘Everyone can suffer from anxiety and depression at times. Karen makes you laugh and I need the exercise. My Dad always said ‘if you don’t use it you lose it’.
